10. Final Performance evaluation

Now that our assessment has been undergone and our piece performed for the final time, I will take this opportunity to reflect and summarise my experience across the module and evaluate our final performance.

(Swain, 2022)

When we performed this group work in assessment, while it went well, there were a couple of moments where we were out of sync with one another, and the choreography became vague.  I feel this lack of clarity made the movements less impactful than in rehearsals, especially in sections where we are dancing in unison.  In hindsight, while we had rehearsed the piece, we rarely were able to dance it with the music being audible to everyone due to there only being one speaker and, again, links to us being reluctant to put ourselves forward as a group.

Creating this piece was enjoyable because of how well we worked together as a group.  Everyone was motivated to make the most of our studio time to develop and clean movement, as well as sticking to our deadlines as to when we wanted to have certain sections completed.  A few of us struggled with having a set timeframe and goals last year, resulting in minimal time to rehearse the piece fully, so this was a good development to see.  An issue we encountered as a group was, at times, needing to be more open to sharing our opinions on the piece and ideas.  Once we had resolved this issue near the end of the process, we were able to progress a lot quicker; this 'over-politeness' definitely cost us time we could have spent articulating the work.  The beneficial side of this mindset is that our group was very open to hearing everyone's ideas and incorporating different people's opinions into the choreography while also being open to constructive criticism.  All of which created a supportive atmosphere in the studio.  I also enjoyed the opportunity to try out other people's unique way of moving and pushing myself to achieve these movements that were out of my comfort zone.

A lesson that I have learned from this process is to ensure the music you choose accurately conveys your theme and stimulus.  As I mentioned in blog 9, I feel our issues with dynamics and lack of climax would have been partly resolved had we chosen music that wasn't so mellow and classical.  While including some music of this nature could have added a nice contrast to the piece, our music choice probably came across as underwhelming.

Overall, I am proud of the work we created and of the rest of my group for doing a fantastic job throughout the creative process.  I have been allowed the opportunity to develop my choreographic skills further, identify my weaknesses as well as enabling me to learn about the process of choreographing with a group dynamic.
